How to make money on YouTube?

As you might have noticed, sometimes there were Advertisements shown before you were viewing a video on YouTube, or there were little boxes shown below the video clips, while you were watching videos.  Those are advertisements which pay money to YouTube.  In other words, YouTube make money by allowing advertisements to be shown on the videos that we upload.

In order to keep generating enough interesting video clips to catch audience' eyeballs, YouTube shares the money it makes from advertisement sponsors with YOU, as a YouTube Partner.  As a result, people would be encouraged to upload more videos or to share video contents on YouTube!

Ok, so how do we make money on YouTube?

First thing first, you need a Google AdSense account, which is how Google and YouTube pay to people.  Once you enable AdSense, there will be Ads showing on the videos that you uploaded.  When more people see you videos or click on the Ads, the more money you make.

However, If you want to use AdSense for video, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
  • You have to own legal rights to monetize video content.
  • Content has to be family safe and targeted to users age 13 and older (PG13 materials)
  • You have to be able to manage the video player source code (the product leverages the SDK integration), or use one of our technology partners.
  • YouTube content producers should apply for the YouTube partner program instead.
  • You can only integrate AdSense for video on web-based Flash video players.

While you don’t necessarily need to own specific video content in order to use AdSense for video, you do need to own the legal rights to monetize it.
You can choose the AdSense for video integration option that best suits your business model:

  1. Direct: if you own the video player source code.
  2. Through a partner platform: if you don’t own the video player source code.

There are several types of Ads available on your YouTube videos:

types:

  • Linear:
    • Pre-roll: A linear ad that is played before video content.
    • Mid-roll: A linear ad that is played in the middle of video content.
    • Post-roll: A linear ad that is played after video content.
